i Cryptic Crossword 2156 Poins

After yesterdays exercise in mental torture we are back to more pleasant climes with this IOS reprint. Poins, as Pierre points out in his blog over on Fifteensquared gives us puzzles with “exemplary surfaces” and yes some are difficult to parse but this doesn’t seem to detract from the enjoyment and Pierre does an admirable job of explaining everything which is fortunate as I wouldn’t have been able to offer much enlightenment for 3dn which did cause me to tut slightly. Quite a few ticks but only two got more than one 24ac and

    Thought this was a great puzzle and rattled through it on the train this morning, amusing myself somewhat by initially getting “Alucard” for 17D 🙂

    Very much on the easy side, and thoroughly enjoyable. A relief following yesterday’s struggles.

  3. Got myself in a mess in the NE corner by bunging in mishandle which then made 9a f=difficult to get. Got there in the end but couldn’t parse 23a. 4 – 1.

    Poins continues to get smoother and smoother, very nicely done.
    And here’s a heads up that my blog tomorrow will include a review of Phi’s puzzles in 2017.

    Can’t pretend that I was bowled over with this puzzle, but it was not entirely devoid of features of interest, as Holmes would say. Re-reading the clues for their surfaces, they are notably well turned out as Pierre says. And so to The Times …
