i Cryptic Crossword 2123 Quixote

November 27, 2017

A pretty straightforward puzzle from the Don to start the week. The York street was new to me, but fairly clued so no complaints. Last in was 15d which I also didn’t know, and that I needed to check to make sure it wasn’t BANTAR, or something else along those lines. Belated congratulations to Mr and Mrs Quixote.

COD? 21ac – “Very foolish ape, silly nincompoop, tried to be flirtatious (4,1,4)”. I did wonder, perhaps mischievously, if this clue was linked to 14ac at all…

15d was my last one in as well: rather amusing, that. As for the delightful street in York it’s one of the two I know, and it plainly wasn’t going to be Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate this time. I’ve a feeling it has turned up in a crossword before now, though.

15dn wasn’t a problem as it was one of Terry Wogan’s favourite words and the title of one of his books. The street in York was known but I thought it was more an area than a street but I’m not arguing. My LOI was 6dn, couldn’t see that at all, spent a few days there last year lovely place.

Maybe it’s because I’ve had a busy day and only the occasional moment to devote to this, but I found bits of it chewier than expected. 22dn was my last in, and didn’t think much of that.
