i Cryptic Crossword 2119 Dac

November 22, 2017

Another good puzzle from Dac, what more can you say? Give me a puzzle like this every day. 🙂

I made hard work of today’s offering, lobbing in ONE MAN for 1d, which meant I was looking for a particularly obscure monk at 11ac. And, oh, NEEDLESS anyone at 4ac? Oh well, I got there in the end, and still in a pretty fast time for the i. Solving on a computer you can get away with this sort of thing, on paper it all begins to get rather messy.

There’s some debate about one or two clues over on the other side, but TBH I didn’t spot anything difficult / controversial while solving. Perhaps I just wasn’t paying enough attention.

COD? With lots to like as always, I’m nominating 10d – “Points put by Conservative fearing further presentation of bill (6,7)”.

I made a slow start, but woke up a bit around halfway into it, and was fine from thereon in. Finished (again) in the SE corner.

Highly satisfactory. Rather amused by the outbreak of follicular bifurcation on the other side: I’m willing to bet that nobody was significantly slowed down by those teeny little niggles.

What a nice way to spend an hour. The only thing I had to check was 15dn, it was a case of do you really spell his name like that? Yes you do came the reply.

Very much on Dac’s wavelength today, and all thoroughly gruntling it was too.
To join in the hair-splitting, I’m told that (for the Indy at least) any abbreviation that appears in Collins, Chambers or the COED is fair game. Individual letters taken from longer abbreviations never are, unless they appear in their own right. E.g. I means Italy and Ir means Ireland, despite NI meaning Northern Ireland.
