i Cryptic Crossword 2097 Punk

October 27, 2017

Made a brisk start with 8 and 9 across going straight in but that was it until 21ac, spent a few minutes trying to recall what a Teddy boy’s hairstyle was called and wonder how younger setters might get on with this. Its at this point that the first of the themed single letter clues are encountered and where I started to dislike this puzzle, a situation that continued for quite some time. 24/2dn was the first to fall but I wasn’t sure until 20dn and then it became obvious how the theme was working, happiness restored , well nearly 11ac I couldn’t parse and I have asked for the tab in US bars quite often and 14ac even with new glasses I missed the alternative spelling of course. So what seemed at one time a bit of a chore ended a very pleasing puzzle with lots to enjoy 19dn got a grin but

Have faith, one and all – if Punk starts going all weirdy-weird on you, it’ll turn out to be a real treat. I loved this.
As with the original blogger, my way in to the ruse was via 25a and what had seemed briefly to be impenetrable gradually revealed a terrific sequence of core clues, with able back-up from the supporting cast.
I wonder if Paul/Punk saves his best ideas for the Indy?

I liked quite a few of the non-lettered clues and i guessed what was afoot with the others quite early via 24/2 but seriously disliked the lack of definitions. Unfair to have 6 of them in one puzzle IMO. I normally enjoy a Punk but not this one and I quickly reverted to looking up answers when I would normally kept plugging away.

I’m afraid I never really got beyond the stage of disliking this one. One clue of the themed type is fair enough, but this was a bit much. Never mind…

I’m in the “loved it” camp, of course … the perfect antidote to last Friday’s puzzle.

There should be two ways to an answer, so that when you get one you can be sure it’s the right one, and there weren’t with these thematic ones, so I felt slightly less than gruntled about those. Still, all solved without too much hair-pulling.

Also in the ‘like’ brigade – appropriately enough just finished this after tonight’s punk-fest on BBC4! Took a while to work out the theme but 20 got me started – 10 was cute (thought it was ‘hood’ at first – top = secret forest dweller) and naturally 19 was my COD!
