i Cryptic Crossword 2093 Poins

October 23, 2017

An IoS reprint to start the week, and it couldn’t have been much easier. Well, I found the NE corner to be a little chewier than the rest, but only relative to an extremely straightforward puzzle. I was unsure about the synonym for result in 6d, but the more I think about it the more sense it makes. Otherwise nothing really to question. Another good one for beginners, and for older hands who’re grateful for a relatively gentle start to the week. No, I haven’t woken up yet.

COD? With lots to appreciate, 10ac – “One serving of cake at present (9)”.

Quite so: agreed on all points. I suppose everyone knows the limerick which concerns 28ac and his family?

It was just the aforementioned 28ac that held me up a little, it was the “makes” that I didn’t like.

Thought I’d update it a bit (the original is easily found):

There’s a curious family called Stein
There’s Gert and there’s Ep and there’s Wein
    Gert’s poems are bunk
    Ep’s statues are junk
And Wein is an absolute swine.

And no, I don’t give a tinker’s cuss how he thinks it should be pronounced.
