i Cryptic Crossword 2045 Kairos

August 28, 2017

Like Ali on Fifteensquared I seem to be getting all the Kairos puzzles, and this IOS reprint is like his other offerings being pretty enjoyable, but as is normal for a Monday fairly solvable, although some of the alternative definitions caused a bit of brow furrowing  Facility = Ease in 19ac for example. Both 7dn which was my LOI and 26ac were entered without fully understanding the word play but they couldn’t really be anything else given the crossing letters. Maybe it was all over a bit too quickly if you were looking for something to do on this Bank Holiday or It might be just right if you want to annoy the neighbours by mowing your lawn. Anyway

The lawn doesn’t need doing, so it looks like the general knowledge jumbo for me. Agreed about the debatable definitions, although the one cited seems fine to me. 22ac, though? The use of “indeterminate” in 27ac is a bit rum too, if you ask me. Never mind, an enjoyable if rather quickly dispatched puzzle.

I liked that plenty. Same two not fully parsed – 7d and 26a – although ‘having a facility’ for something is common enough… down our way.
    Jumbo here we come!

  3. An enjoyable puzzle. The SW corner was the last part in. Cottager? I thought that was to do with men on Hampstead Heath?
My only real complaint is that the easier puzzles appear on a Bank Holiday when I have plenty of leisure time. The tougher ones come midweek when I only have an hour in the evening. Why?

You’re not the first to say, not the first at all…

Mr Pure Evil had sold out by 8.30 this morning, which is very unusual. Does this mean that the Bank Holiday edition attracts occasional readers, and that the gentle cryptic and odd assortment of extra puzzles are aimed at them? Anyway, my understanding of the Law of Averages suggests we’re due for a mindbender, most likely on Thursday. 😉

Agreed regarding the iffy “indeterminate” and the couple of not-fully-parsed ones, by the way. I had an unaccountable blank on 24dn (stupid as I’d read the Maltese Falcon only this spring) but sailed relatively calmly through the rest of it.

FWIW, got down to two on the Jumbo General: had to ask someone online for 17ac as I know stuff all about football, and then 57dn seemed wilfully obscure. (What else could the setter have used to fit A?R?O? … Aytron [Senna] … air-con?)
