i Cryptic Crossword 2043 Nestor

August 25, 2017

For the second Friday in succession we get Nestor. I found this quite difficult and hard to get into. A bit of knowledge about Belgian geography, long forgotten battlefields and obscure plants will assist the solver. I was pleased to get the battle at 1ac from the cryptic but the plant at 20ac left me a bit bewildered as Leaf Ridges = Veins is a complete unknown to me, similarly 16ac the John part of the clue was a bit iffy unless you are familiar with prostitutes. 18dn was solved from the anagram but the rest of the clue left me baffled and 11ac had a question mark by it. Despite thinking that Ship = She a bit loose 28ac amused me and creates a bit of discussion over on Fifteensquared . There is a Nina which I expect you all spotted (I didnt) which I suppose describes the setters opinion of this puzzle and whilst mostly the clues are sound nothing jumps out as an “Oh thats really special” so

COD  10d Minute: 1,000 or 10,080 of them (4)

I thought it was superb, unimpeachably fair, and a fine way to finish off what has been a particularly good crossword week. Plenty of ticks, and 18d got two.

If anyone is greedy enough to want another cracking puzzle, Cornick’s alter ego Maize will be appearing in the Independent tomorrow. Highly recommended.

Ah – John/ trick – I thought it had to be that, but even my misspent youth didn’t quite venture into such realms. ‘What, don’t you read?’ I hear you ask… Yes, well…
Anyhow, apart from that question mark I agree this was another highlight in a particularly excellent week. Thank you i and idothei both.
Did anyone else think that the first word of that plant in 20a also related to the theme?

An enjoyable challenge, definitely on the trickier side, that I solved in dribs and drabs throughout the day. I spotted the Nina, which speeded things up at the close. Any theme I’m afraid has totally passed me by. 🙂

I’m obviously having a thick day, or at least not on Nestor’s wavelength at all. Solved 6 in the car park before starting work this morning … then had such a busy day I wasn’t able to look at it again until coming home … whereupon I stared and stared and stared and solved two more in about an hour and a half, and then gave up. Sorry guys, I have nothing to contribute today!
