i Cryptic Crossword 1991 Quixote

I must admit to not spotting the wordplay for 16d despite seeing variations on it several times over the years. Over on the other side the consensus seems to have been that this was on the tricky side for the Don, but it seemed about par to me. Perhaps less obscure answers even than we sometimes get.

COD? 4d – ‘Items coming from such a period of austerity? (9,5)’. Yes, there is an equally acceptable alternative answer. No, it doesn’t fit the crossing letters…

Seemed like one of the Don’s gentlest offerings to me, but it may be that all that cudgelling of the brain at the end of last week has honed my crossword solving abilities to a razor edge. No, I don’t think so either. 96% good stuff today, but the definition part of 15d was uncharacteristically clunky in my opinion.
