i Cryptic Crossword 1921 Dac

April 5, 2017

After yesterday’s travails, welcome relief from Dac with a pretty straightforward, accessible puzzle. Two thirds of this almost a R&W, with only the SE corner left to take maybe three quarters of the time. Last in 14ac, where I spent too long trying to fit MAN or F somewhere into the answer. The muddle over 2d back in the day has evidently been resolved, thankfully, fairly elegantly, though the surface reading is perhaps a little unconvincing now. Would anyone remember 22ac if it wasn’t for the original pitch of Star Trek as 22ac To The Stars?

COD? Lots to like, but I’ll go with 26ac, which raised a smile: ‘Dusty town of Flanders? (11)’.

Very much the same impressions here, especially the “welcome relief” part. Something of a masterclass, really.

Similar here. Casemate also my LOI.
‘Wagon Train’ meant nothing to me though.

  3. Sigh of relief after yesterday. Didn’t know casemate and also couldn’t parse 12d and 15d. Enjoyable nevertheless.
