i Cryptic Crossword 1911 Donk

March 24, 2017

The second puzzle from Donk and just its as good as the first that we had at the beginning of the month. Some very inventive clues and ingenious misdirection’s produced quite a few smiles and very few question marks. 17a was one query, I spell it eyeing although it appears either is fine and “Just for Men” I had forgotten about that and thought I was looking for the sort of magazines only found on the top shelf. 21a was another query until finding out what “tackle” was actually referring to then that question mark was replaced with a smile. Only one that I didn’t really like was 3d  but that’s just a personal dislike of “Gob” and  it seems a strange synonym for teeth. None of that though spoilt an excellent puzzle.

Thoroughly enjoyable, and a bit easier than some we’ve had over the past few days. 5d was my last one in, taking up a large proportion of that time.

Wasn’t it good? Bags of invention in there, thank you Donk, with a freshness of style to boot. I didn’t get 26d (SHOP) for some reason, but probably should have.
Donk is set to appear about 7 or 8 times a year, by the look of things, and very welcome his name will be too.

I nodded off halfway through … no reflection on Donk’s workmanship, just one of those days. Lots of fun anyway. Having never heard of Just for Men 17 held out for a long time, much of it spent fixating on “Grecian” – so in a topsy turvy way I was thinking along the right lines despite being way off the scent. A tie between Radian and Donk for my favourite puzzle this week.
