i Cryptic Crossword 1829 Morph

December 19, 2016

A bit of a tricky start to the week. About a third went in quickly enough, but the rest put up a real battle, with lots of inventive wordplay to untangle. Quite a few I didn’t fully understand, but they’re all explained in the original blog and comments. I didn’t like ‘D’ for ‘would’ in 27ac, but the rest seemed fair enough.

COD? 18ac – ‘Like a participant in murder going straight? (2,3,4,5)’.

I was expecting something festive today when I saw Morph’s name, but we’re still in the summer of 2012:

Difficult in places yes but 3d was just a bit too much a setter being clever, 5d was also going that way and I don’t like being expected to know terms used by drug addicts, or is snorting cocaine so commonplace now that everyone uses them? Apart from those and the D in 27a it was pretty good.

Morph on a Monday? I didn’t like 27ac at all, but otherwise no complaints – good fun by and large.

The slang term Sprouthater objects to is rather interesting, incidentally: it seems to be a venerable word for the taking of a copious draught of liquor dating back to the 16th century, but appropriated to describe snorting cocaine in the 1970s.

Not too keen on dis=hell. Otherwise a very enjoyable solve. Just the right measure of easy, moderate and hard difficulty. I like a bit of cheekiness so 17 was my CotD, 10 & 20 raised a titter also.
