i Prize Cryptic Crossword 1804 by Phi

November 26, 2016

Saturday 17th November 2016

In which our setter had LACHRYMAL GLAND across the top and FAIRY GODMOTHER across the bottom, in both instances the pair of words being split across two lights to neatly fill the row.  I like that.

And what an enjoyable solve it was. Plenty of ticks by the clues with just LYSIS and UT INFRA being unfamiliar.  Having said that, the former did ring a distant bell and the latter is similar to Dac’s UT SUPRA from back in September – also clued as a hidden by the way.

For Clue of the Day, and pipping both 13d and 16d to the post, I must concur with duncansheill at Fifteensquared back in 2012:

18a Comedy film duo going up and down (7)

I wasn’t pleased by 14ac: at least Dac’s “ut supra” is in Cassell’s Foreign Words and Phrases, whereas that isn’t. So it went in by extrapolation from the former, with a harrumph. Lots of goodies by way of compensation though, of which my favourite was 16d.

I usually rely on Google to check these foreign phrases, so 14ac didn’t trouble me much. 22ac on the other hand I’d not heard of so thought I’d got it wrong for a long time. Another Phi that put up more than the normal amount of resistance in places.

Hello from me after a few weeks away… Got part way through this then came back to it this weekend, very satisfying to complete it, for some reason I had a blind spot on dog eat dog, should have been a walk in but I just couldn’t see it for a long time. Second for COD, Hope and Crosby, moist also works nicely once parsed. Good puzzle and blog, thanks R

Unsurprisingly UT INFRA is in Chambers – and Rick, it’s good to see you back with us 🙂

Thanks Cornick, never went away, but not been able to give much attention even to my once a week effort on the Saturday phi so been content to lurk recently. Rick
