i Cryptic Crossword 1805 Quixote

November 21, 2016

A pretty straightforward, enjoyable offering from the Don to start the week, with a couple of new words learnt as ever. 1d was that well hidden I failed to spot the hidden word despite getting the answer. 11ac I vaguely knew, but found I was uncertain how to spell. 17ac was my last one in, geography being my weak(est) point as ever.

COD? 9ac – ‘Winding road to front of mansion brings one to this? (7)’.

Nice to have him back on a Monday, isn’t it? No real difficulties with this; 11ac came as an amusing surprise, though, and 2d needed checking. Agreed on the COD.

I did spent too long trying to unscramble the anagram of 11ac into a BRITISH “old premier” before the penny dropped. 2dn was my LOI due to not having heard of it and having to rely on the component parts…
    10dn clue: ewwww.

But yeah, back to the reasonably gentle Mondays.

Fairly whizzed through this even though 2d,6d and 11a were new to me. Thought 12d a bit odd, I wouldn’t equate nuisance callers with that answer.
