i Prize Cryptic Crossword 1792 by Eimi

November 12, 2016

Saturday 5th November 2016

Please to remember the fifth of November – Horsetail,  Chrysanthemum, Ring.

Diadem, Spider, Crosette, Roman Candle, Peony, Palm and Time Rain.

Eimi also threw in Bengal Fire and Fish for a pyrotechnical celebration in every one of the acrosses last Saturday.  If any cruciverbally inclined fireworks display designers were solving they will have been suitably thrilled.  The rest of us can thank our editor (for such is Eimi, in case you didn’t know) for a topical piece of education.

Sound cluing of course and all pretty accessible apart from the NW corner where ‘Horsetail’ (a Turkish standard apparently) crossed with Tronador, Barm and Glinka – the latter being another composer just outside my top 100.  One ‘Libertarian’ clue at 23d is noteworthy (Black and blue Roman numerals = LIVID) but my COD goes to this delightfully re-worked old chestnut:

13a Front of negligee laced wrongly – that’s wicked! (6)

Quite tough for a crossword originally published on a Monday, wasn’t it? The theme passed me by, of course, and led to some obscurities which were difficult to track down without resorting to the computer – something I prefer to avoid if possible. 23d is certainly noteworthy, and I was amazed to see such a clue in a crossword by Eimi.

Glinka is worth knowing about just for the overture to Ruslan and Ludmilla, which is surely one of the most rollicking four minutes’ worth in the light classical repertoire. Guaranteed to put a smile on the face.

The theme passed me by as well despite spotting Roman Candle, but I found it a lot more straightforward than the usual Saturday puzzles. Perhaps I’m more on Eimi’s wavelength that Phi’s?
