i Cryptic Crossword 1794 Raich

November 8, 2016

A funny-looking grid today, which immediately suggested a Nina – but as it turned out jiggery pokery of a different sort was the order of the day, all to do with one 26d. A visit to the relevant Fifteensquared blog will give the game away so I shall not, but simply tip my hat to Raich for shoehorning all the related material into the grid without recourse to dubious vocabulary.

14ac might have been unfamiliar to some, but was clued in such a way as to make put the solution beyond doubt – I liked that one. The popular “culture” reference in 15/27 made me grimace. On the whole the puzzle was pitched at a gentle level with rather a hefty quota of anagrams, and besides, once the theme became clear there were quite a few items which simply had to appear somewhere. All good, enjoyable stuff, but nothing much stands out as COD material. My choice of 19d, therefore, is pretty arbitrary:

“School about to dip into uplifting musical work (7)”

The puzzle originally appeared on 4th June 2012, a date which appears to have no particular significance to the theme.

I struggled a little with the cryptic def at 17d, but the rest was plain sailing, surprisingly so in fact for a Tuesday since Virgilius jumped ship. I wouldn’t be averse to more like this to counterbalance some of the more heavyweight offerings.

When compiling a themed grid like this, the fewer possible entries the harder it is to find them a place in the grid. So Raich did indeed do some nifty shoehorning given that his hands were tied with only six titles, split over 9 lights, all of which were included of course.
