i Cryptic Crossword 1790 Monk

November 3, 2016

An enjoyable puzzle from Monk – not too difficult, but not too easy either, which is probably what we’re looking for at this end of the week. A couple of things that were new to me – 1d and 21ac – but the wordplay left little doubt as to the answers. There’s a Nina, that the setter explains in the comments on the original blog.

COD? 11ac – ‘Cautious umpires blessed with triple-century by end of test (11)’.

Back to April 2012 for this Saturday Prize Puzzle reprint:

I was pretty confident this would be a pangram, and when that didn’t work out I spotted “EMBERS”, completely overlooking the intended Nina. Ah well, never mind: the puzzle was an enjoyable one and definitely on the easier side for Monk. Plenty of ticks today.

Yup, lots of good ‘uns in there.
Just spotted the Nina thanks to your nod, JoW. Very clever to weave that and associated words into the grid without, as it were, our being able to see the join.
