i Cryptic Crossword 1758 Tees

September 27, 2016

So this was all about Tees then? 😉 Unlike the original blogger and a few in the comments back in the day I spotted the ubiquitous T’s with only a few clues solved in the SE corner, so this was, for me, relatively straightforward. As I often struggle with this setter, this meant a time about par for the i rather than through the roof. Quite a few I’m glad I didn’t have to blog from scratch, as there is lots of clever, sometimes complex stuff going on. All above board and thoroughly enjoyable. LOI 19ac, the gardener(s) in question being new to me.

COD? 2d – ‘Have faith in Tees to provide some lovemaking synonym? (4,2,4,3,2)’.

It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a “special” as impressive as this, so a well-deserved round of applause for Tees from me. Plenty of excellent clues too, and only 19 which could be considered specialist knowledge (unless one is in the habit of listening to Gardeners’ Question Time). Amongst the many ticks I have a particularly emphatic one next to 8ac.

After the first read through I thought this was going to be really tough but most of it soon fell into place. Failed until almost the very end to see all the t’s, didn’t know the gardener so needed Google’s help to confirm. LOI was 9a I just can’t see that by=at.

I didn’t much care for that either. All I can think of is that if something happens by night, say, it happens at night. If that’s what Tees intended it’s fair, but I wouldn’t argue if you said it’s too clever by half.

vide OED “by”, definition III 19b. 🙂

I was looking for a peripheral Nina from the get-go so, with a few T’s in the SE corner and given the setters name I put them all in on a wing and a prayer, which obviously helped a lot. Still tricky in places though.
Agreed on COD, although 8a certainly deserved that exclamation mark. Horticulture’s my business, so I guess I lucked out on 19a.

Apologies for those two Americanisms 🙂

First time around back in 2012 I totally failed to spot the Ts; this time I did see them in time to speed up solving the NW corner. Needless to say I didn’t remember anything from the first time around.

I was obviously not in the right place; failed to spot the Ts, failed to get more than about 60% through the puzzle, abandoned it unfinished.
