i Cryptic Crossword 1757 Quixote

September 26, 2016

A nice breezy puzzle to start the week, a good one for novice solvers. THOLE was new to me, but what else could it be?

COD? 23d – ‘Port that could be a haunt of vice (4)’.

An enjoyable puzzle. Nice to come across “thole”, a fine Old English word I last encountered when studying Beowulf, back in the dark ages. Possibly a teensy bit archaic now.

When I first started doing crosswords a very long time ago port always seemed to indicate Aden. I’ve really no idea why as other ports were available. Good puzzle thole and 4d were new to me.

Yup, in fact 19ac was my LOI precisely because I’d never heard of THOLE … but as you say, it couldn’t be anything else in the end.
