i Cryptic Crossword 1742 Morph

September 8, 2016

An enjoyable puzzle from Morph of perhaps average difficulty. The answers were often more forthcoming than the wordplay, especially with some of the longer answers, so in they went without worrying to much about it. 1ac doesn’t work since the old pope retired, but I doubt many solvers will have struggled much with the definition. For a while I thought there might have been a theme around sayings, but it appears not.

COD? 5d – ‘… coming from neighbouring country, infiltrating while arsing around (7)’.

Agreed on all points, except the somewhat revolting 19ac would be my COD. This seemed surprisingly easy going for Morph.

Similar here with the exception of 21a which I thought was dreadful.

Quite slow to get going as I juggled this with putting up a greenhouse, but as soon as I stopped that and CON-CEN-TRAT-ED, all the secrets revealed themselves beautifully. Very satisfying and enjoyable, although I too thought Nyon seemed a bit out of place.

Why is pussyfoot “evidence of infected toenail”?

Same experience here – solved okay but with several where the wordplay was not understood. Nyon? Never heard of it.
