i Prize Cryptic Crossword 1708 by Phi

August 6, 2016

Saturday 30th July 2016

I have very little to say about 1708 other than it had an unusual grid pattern – fine by me, despite the double unches. These are frowned upon if they come at either end of a light, but perfectly okay if not, and the balance of crossers is 50% or above, as was the case last Saturday.

Pretty standard high quality fare from the prolific one, without any of the obscurities we sometimes encounter, so a straightforward solve and all perfectly enjoyable.

COD?   Erm… how about this one?

TBH I can’t remember much about this one, apart from it being pretty straightforward…

Much the same here, although I do recall being amused by 2d and 20ac. So there really wasn’t a theme or nina, then?

Seemed pretty vanilla, then again vanilla is a very nice flavour. Always nice to finish one, and this one was nice. Thanks for the blog, and of course to phi

Had I constructed that grid, I’d have been tempted to lose 8 of those 12 double-unches by adding four 3-letter words. (I know they’re a bit frowned upon too, but … swings and roundabouts eh?) With the existing answers, three of those four could have been something common enough (“I do”, “ebb”, and “old” or “odd”); it’s only the “h_o” that would have required something obscure (“hao” anyone?).
