i Cryptic Crossword 1713 Klingsor

August 5, 2016

Where’s the morning gone? reading the paper and doing this crossword, the crossword part being the more enjoyable though. The only real obscurity was the opera at 13 but the answer was obvious once the checking letters were in. The only other clues that I had to check in reference books for were Smetana in 3d and the spelling in 14d. The setters clever anagram in 10a was wasted on me as the answer seemed pretty obvious, the same at 25a although I needed some checking letters for this. Lots of good clues to choose from today  with 1, 15,17 and 19a, 3,12 and 23d all getting ticks of approval but for

COD  11a – Abroad, impasses regularly resolved – by me?  (10)

Just finished this; LOI was 21ac which I thought a pretty weak DD.
But that aside this was another good ’un. Thankfully I *did* get the anagram in 10ac (actually put a tick against that one), and was familiar with the opera at 13. Worried for a while that 25ac was going to require foopball [sic] knowledge, but was relieved when the penny dropped. Sneaky def at 19 🙂

It’s been a particularly good crossword week, and this was a nice one to finish off with: not too difficult but thoroughly satisfying. Sterling stuff. I did feel that Klingsor was trespassing on Arachne’s territory with 15 and 17ac … 🙂

18d caused me a little difficulty, but the rest was surprisingly straightforward for Klingsor. A good puzzle to end the working week on.
