i Cryptic Crossword 1683 Crosophile

July 1, 2016

A good crossword from Crosophile to end the working week. This was a little tricky in places, but not overly so. Some nice wordplay that was a pleasure to unpick. No theme or nina that I can see, but there again we don’t expect one with this setter.

COD? 26ac – ‘I’ll don battered old hat – time to go away? Yes (7)’.

Our second IoS reprint of the week. We’ll be in danger of running out at this rate.

Yup, quite nice really. 21dn was new/obscure/unfamiliar, but given a correspondingly easy clue to compensate. 27ac took me longer than it should, hung up as I was on the conviction that it was going to start with CENT-.

This was what I’ve been hoping for: a vanilla puzzle from Crosophile in which he can demonstrate his clue writing skills. Pretty good, too – especially 16, 22 and 27ac.

21d is a bit silly really, given the ease with which 20ac could have been rejigged to avoid such an obscurity – but at least the answer was given a big neon lit signpost. My other niggle is with 1ac, which presumably refers to a Herr Rottweiler, the dog of that name not being known for its powers of speech. Nonetheless, a thumbs up this time.

As did dtw42, I spent a long time thinking 27ac started CENT- and then wondering if it was an anagram of TWO COINS with an extra S (= shilling) in it somewhere. And I wasn’t helped for 21dn by an old edition of Chambers which mis-spelt ELAEIS as ‘elacis’ (later editions have got it right) – fortunately not affecting the crossing letters. Couldn’t parse 6dn, either: it was obviously ALTAIR but I kept reading it as A + LT +AIR and (naturally) couldn’t see how LT equated to ‘key’ – doh!
