i Cryptic Crossword 1682 Nestor

June 30, 2016

A little more of a challenge today, as we expect from Nestor, and a Thursday Independent reprint. The longer answers weren’t as intimidating as they first appeared, once you spotted the definition, and we weren’t short of some easier clues elsewhere, so perhaps not as tricky as it first appeared. 19ac was new to me, but the wordplay was friendly enough.

28ac I’m afraid brings just one thought to mind, the Anne Droid:

COD? 22ac – ‘Something catchy that’s satisfying – to caterpillar, at least (6)’.

Not in the mood for this at all today, so I have one lonely tick (4d) and a welter of sarcastic comments. Best draw a veil over that, methinks.

Apart from not understanding the reasoning for the def in 22ac, I sailed through this one fairly quickly.

Yes, dtw42, so did I. Not because it was necessarily easier than some recent struggles, but because, for once, I had a morning off work and was able to sit in the sun on the patio with a cup of coffee and no distractions. Bliss!

Re 19ac, was this puzzle chosen for recycling now because 2016 is the 10th anniversary of Ivor Cutler’s death (there’s a feature/drama about him on Radio 3 this coming Sunday), or was it just coincidence?

You saw some sun this week? Lucky indeed! It’s rained here almost constantly for two weeks now.
