i Cryptic Crossword 1676 Monk

June 23, 2016

Another stinker today, courtesy of Monk. 🙂 The clues might be fair, as nmsindy noted back in the day, but there were far too many obscurities to make this a comfortable solve. Rhum for island for inch, CinC for supreme commander, etc. Not to mention a few odd anagram indicators. There’s literally a NiNa based on the metals in the left and right columns that I must admit to completely missing. Another old Independent prize puzzle that I don’t think was well served by a weekday slot.

COD? 6d – ‘Bird in a government department working only half a day? (9)’.

Krab is a slang term for a carabiner, used by rock climbers. It took a lot of googling to find that!

Can you imagine a game of snooker with Monk? It’d take forever, and you’d spend most of the time wedged in a corner behind the black. Can’t say I found this much fun, and only finished because it had turned into a grudge match. Not quite sure whether I love or loathe that on/off device in 18ac … clever though, as was the NiNa. Too clever by half you might almost say. Anyway, in view of the stellar Tuesday and Thursday puzzles last week, it feels like we’re getting the payoff now.

Oooookay, well I managed *most* of this without too much fuss; needed my girlfriend’s gentle guiding to explain 8ac to me (oops), but we both failed entirely on 17. Never heard of it, and not a “plausible-looking-let’s-see-if-it’s-a-thing” kind of word.

Interesting to see 1ac clued without resort to Britney Spears, though the anagrind was a bit iffy to say the least.
