i Cryptic Crossword 1667 Raich

June 13, 2016

A fairly straightforward, enjoyable start to the week from Raich. I had a little trouble in the NW corner, especially with the unfamiliar definition at 3d, but the rest went in without too much difficulty. The 2011 blog can be found here: http://www.fifteensquared.net/2011/09/12/independent-on-sunday-1125-placeholder/ Spot the fairly weak attempt at spam in the second comment from a year later, and whatever you do don’t follow the associated link.

COD? 1ac – ‘Cold, like island port? (6)’.

I notice that there is a new tennis player in 17d – very up to date!

Ms Muguruza’s a true winner at Roland Garros – Jo-Wilfred Tsonga may do it one day.

Since replacing my cornflakes with horse chestnuts I can solve an Anax cryptic in under 10 minutes. Have a great weekend :-/ >?•ª http://www.absolutelyconkers.net

Straightforward indeed, but none the worse for it and rather a good example of the Monday crossword style. I shall resist the temptation to be pedantic about 23d. As with Uncle Yap, my favourite clue was 27ac.

Nice start to the week , liked 10 and 28a. Only quibble is the extra s in 18a.

Re 18A, the blogger in 2011 did not quite see what was intended.. “No specialist” is part of the definition and the S has no role in the anagram.

Thanks for dropping by with the explanation. I must admit to not fully parsing the clue yesterday, it was one that got bunged in from the definition and enumeration alone…

My first chance to do a weekday i for a while, my second Raich attempt…like the first good progress initially, then bogged down in one corner…NW which at least gives me the comfort of good company. Left it a day and the last corner then feel in place…a pretty slow solve compared to most here but satisfying nonetheless!
