i Cryptic Crossword 1650 Punk

May 24, 2016

Mmm, I’m afraid this is one that I didn’t enjoy at all. I dislike the sort of interlinked clue thing we had today, where you need to solve a few gateway clues to make head or tail of what’s going on. Pretty tough as well, I got bored three quarters of the way through and didn’t bother finishing, which I think is a first with the i.

Anyway, lots more comment here:

Like you I didn’t like this much but I did preserve and finish it. Too many tenuous allusions, 1a I thought being the worst.

Ah well, at least one of us enjoyed it (I suspect that it might be to Cornick’s taste as well). The central conceit didn’t quite convince, but there was plenty to amuse and, on occasion, dazzle. My favourites were 5 and 6d.

I started late, churned through it over dinner – the penny dropping at 7.50pm (ahem). Needed to enlist my girlfriend to help with the last 4. I’m not a great enthusiast for interlinking cross-referencing clues either. Hey ho. Quite liked the snack at 12ac, and 5dn was clever.

Well you’re absolutely right, AndyT – I thought this was a cracker! Harder than many Punk’s perhaps, but I’m sure I’ve met Paul’s in a similar vein before.
I rather liked the Nick Park allusion in 1d, sprouthater, but if it was the ‘alternative’ spelling of a word we all know should really be spelled ‘mynah’ that you objected to, I’m with you 100%.
Brilliantly conceived and executed, I thought with the seemingly impenetrable 8d/30a surely the prime example of what you’ll have either loved or hated.
Top blog by Pierre at Fifteensquared too, by the way.
