i Cryptic Crossword 1605 Nestor

April 1, 2016

If you have been waiting for a puzzle that was a bit more of a challenge than that posed by the previous few days offerings then I think you may be satisfied with this well crafted offering from Nestor. Constructing a puzzle in which all the answers are two words and the clues tricky and inventive must have taken some doing. I did feel that 9a,14a and 19d were a bit contrived just to fit the two word theme but all the rest were excellent which makes picking just one very hard. 1d, 8d and 22a all were particularly pleasing to solve but for COD I will pick

13d   Murphy goes round to study wicket and make no progress   (5,5)

I was very happy with this one, thank you. A few clues were distinctly borderline, but no real complaints in the end. Round of applause for Nestor: easily the most interesting puzzle of the week … for quite a while, in fact.

Quite tough in places, as you say, but thoroughly enjoyable. As Andy said, best puzzle for some time.

Loved that – fave amongst many was 18a.
