i Cryptic Crossword 1586 Nestor

March 10, 2016

A very enjoyable puzzle, with lots of ticks by the clues by the end. That said, it was quite difficult, so I’ll have to be quick getting the blog out. 😉 Last in 25 / 18 / 21.

COD? 19ac – ‘Objective might be having upper lip shaved (8)’.

Glad you enjoyed it, Jon. I did not – like pulling teeth, it was. And there’s the little matter of 18d, which got a “NO! NO!! NO!!!” next to it, thus exhausting the next six months’ allowance of exclamation marks. I imagine Sprouthater feels much the same way. 12ac was a cracker though. 😉

Sprouthater is away at the moment, let’s just hope 18d didn’t ruin his holiday. 🙂

I found parts of this very accessible and other parts very difficult – have only just finished it (4pm). Last in were 20, 24 and 27 … long after the rest of the grid.

I’m with JonofWales on this one. Right in my Goldilocks zone for difficulty and consistently inventive clues with delightful definitions and clever wordplay. Loved it.
And as for 18d, if Supertramp – with an all-time peak of number 7 in the hit parade back in 1979 – were entitled to an entire Guardian prize crossword last Saturday, surely Westlife’s FOURTEEN number ones must entitle them to just one entry in the i today?

      Who is Supertramp?

Oh, very well then – I have applied the Brain of Britain test, and yes, I can well imagine Robert Robinson asking a question about Westlife. With the ill-concealed contempt of which he was the master, naturally, but I concede the point.
