i Cryptic Crossword 1577 Anarche

February 29, 2016

What could prompt what I believe is Anarche’s first puzzle in the i, and a reprint from 2012 too while we’re still making our way through 2011? LEAP DAY across the bottom of the grid, and MARRY ME across the top, of course. February 29th being the one day of the year that, traditionally, the female of the species is allowed to propose. Spotted a few hints elsewhere to things romantic, in 8ac for example, and otherwise in 11ac and 6d. 🙂

Thought this was a fun puzzle, of about average difficulty, though with a couple of obscurities (in 5d for example), but none to be fair that weren’t possible to guess.

COD? 6d – ‘Smug, oily bastard accepting firm, sound discipline (10)’.

It had to be 6d really! This was quite a surprise, and a welcome one since Anarche / Arachne is one of my favourite compilers. Plenty of mischief in this one as expected, and a trademark spider.

Although it’s integral to the theme, I thought 13d was a bit much for a daily puzzle – and my dictionary agrees. Did anybody else find that the across clues were nearly all write-ins, but the downs were altogether another matter?

I hadn’t realised that Anarche and Arachne were the same setter so tackled this without prejudice. As such I found it okay, but upon discovering that it was by one of my favourite setters, I revised my opinion upwards several notches. Unfair? Ridiculous? Of course, but at least I’m honest about it!

I was expecting a topical puzzle for leap day and checked the 15sq archive to find the Indy setter on leap day 2012 was Anarche and that there was a nina, so I was well prepared. Can’t remember doing the puzzle back then so it was still a challenge.
And btw the setter in the Indy for 1/3/2011 was Raich so today’s Raich in the i may also be topical. Gwyl Dewi Hapus!

The i’s reprinted puzzles are all new for me, as I’d long given up on the Independent by the time they were first published, so these reprints work quite nicely for me.

Dydd Dewi Sant hapus i chi hefyd! 🙂

Well, it was Raich then, but not the one you were expecting. 🙂
