I Cryptic Crossword 1569 Monk

February 19, 2016

I thought this was tough. Missed the palindromes around the edges until the end so I missed the help that they could have provided. Some very clever clues here but some like 4d 5d 15a and 26a were, to me dubious also didn’t appreciate the unnecessary IN at the beginning of 27a.

Despite these complaints I found this an enjoyable mental tussle.

COD for me is the lovely misleading

23d Transported me to sides of Hoover Dam (6)

It’s been a while since we’ve had a three pipe problem like this, and it was probably Monk last time too. Hard work, but the obscurity was in the word play rather than the vocabulary, where it belongs. 4d left me unconvinced too: it’s a little too clever to be fair – but otherwise no complaints. Amongst the many enjoyably devious clues 2d and 28ac stood out for me.

Quite tough, but satisfying to finish. Spotting what was going on around the borders sped things up towards the end.

Probably a four pipe problem for me – glad to finish without electronic help. Enjoyable, spotted Nina half way through which just HAD to be there.
By the way, Mark Kelmanson (M on K) was in my year at Leeds – friend of a friend sort of thing.

Well, it’s a long time since I last flung an i crossword away unfinished, but I’ve just given up barely halfway through it. Sorry guys, but that one was completely beyond me.
