i Prize Cryptic Crossword 1505 by Phi

Saturday 5th December  2015

Phi was in his punning mode last week, so for example, backwaters were not a problem for ducks (arf!), whoopee cushions came notwithstanding (arf, arf!) and Islamic state was to be read as ‘I’m a mate’ … Oops, I’m not sure that idea would quite get past the In Tray in 2015, which makes the 2011 we were living in when this puzzle first appeared seem somehow part of a more innocent age…

COD: 18a  Fail to support marriage turning nasty? One’s back in pub (4,2,3)

Another good puzzle from Phi. If I hadn’t been landed with a load of DIY, this would have been an enjoyable, leisurely solve. Weekends, eh?

Yes, rather humorous in places. After that long run of ninas and themes (most of which slipped past me unnoticed until the blog appeared) I’ve been on the lookout … quite frustrating.

Remember laughing inwardly at 1A Backwater, but had never come across 14D Athelstan before. How I dislike the word eatery in 20A, though it seems the US term has been around since early 20th century.
