i Prize Cryptic Crossword 1493 by Phi

Pairs of brothers last week.  My general knowledge  does not, alas, run to Chang & Eng (the original ‘Siamese twins’), to Alberich having a brother called Mime or to Mario having one called Luigi.  And remembering the names of all 12 apostles is hard enough, without having to know who’s related to whom – I expect Sprouthater hated it!

The definitions were, in effect, absent for all those clues, which meant they had to be deduced from wordplay alone.   ‘Brother to someone else is little more helpful than saying ‘male person’ after all.  But the wordplay wasn’t always easy – Ar for Arabian was new to me, for example.  I struggled, finding it much harder than the usual Phi.

Heigh-ho, the good folk at Fifteensquared liked it (mostly) and even found it easier than usual for Phi (!?).  Anyhow they have kindly provided all the answers and parsing for us, just click here.

COD I suppose should go to the gateway clue at 18a: Concern to secure right element in order? (7)

Correct I thought it was awful.

I *did* know Eng & Chang, and Mario & Luigi, but not Mime (“What kinda stoopid name izzat?”, as Buford Tannen might say). “Simon Peter” as a name was sufficiently familiar for me to spot it when the filled spaces began to suggest it, but I had to rely on my girlfriend (who gives slightly more of a fig about biblical doings than I do) for the gen on who his brother was. I knew that I didn’t know the Orwell so Googled that fairly early on just to give myself a chance. (Known unknowns and all that.)

The pair I didn’t know was Mario and Luigi, but presumably we’re talking Super Mario Brothers? Forgive me if I can’t be bothered to check, please: it was obvious enough which names were required. All very enjoyable, and a touch less difficult than usual I thought … but far more challenging than today’s which had me wondering what day of the week it was.

Orwell? Can’t find him (although he was prominent yesterday).

Yes it is Super Mario (not my bag)… and indeed dtw42 & I have been naughtily allowing the discussion of yesterday’s blog to spill over into today’s.

The biblical brothers were a write in for me, but as for the rest, blimey! Generally not fond of crosswords where we end up with wordplay but no proper definition.
