i Cryptic Crossword 1456 Morph

October 9, 2015

Sprouthater is still on holiday, so you’re stuck with me for another Friday. As it’s a Morph today, and a good one at that, blogging this was no trouble at all. ๐Ÿ™‚ A theme running throughout of 27’s which was very nicely done. I found this a lot easier to start than finish, with a few of the four letter clues holding out at the end.

COD? 11ac – ‘Writhed topless – and not just that! (5)’.

Here’s the 2011 blog:

Very, very good. Got 27d quite early – cos it fitted in front of 1d – then, like you Jon, it all went very happily along till those tricky 4-letterers.
Mis-guessed 7d as SAGO because gas is spew when you talk, and I’ve never met cat as meaning spew before. A sheltered life, obviously.

Much the same here, and lots of fun to be had. The more i look, the more pervasive the theme seems to be: yes, very good indeed.

About 7d, though … surely “Whip up duck pancake” would have done the job, even if it’s not as chuckle-worthy. That sense of cat gets a “dial. and colloq.” in the OED (which is getting a lot of use this week), and it’s the last definition given. Couldn’t find it in any other available dictionary.

Had a lot of fun with this, even if there were a fair few that beat me. Managed to work out 12ac from the parsing the clue, although the definition remains a mystery to me.

A good test imo. Needed some help with 7D and 18A, obscure definitions for me. I found the phrasing for 12A a bit OFF-putting, as the word also appeared in the solution. Why not use “dismissed”, it amounts to the same and maintains the cricketing connection?
