i Cryptic Crossword 1454 Dac

October 7, 2015

It really doesn’t do to be cocksure, and Mordred delivered a salutary reminder of that yesterday.  Onions had cleared away all the reference books by the time I started on today’s puzzle, but after the first run through I was beginning to think that he needn’t have bothered.  Nonetheless, the old grey cells did limber up and the thing was polished off pretty smartly without recourse to the dictionary.

Dac was on particularly good form today: whilst we’ve come to expect all his clues to read like English and work like clockwork, there was some additional artistry at work, as suggested by 7d.  That was rather helpful in the end.  2d and 14ac both raised a smile, but my LOI was the rather sneaky 5d, so that can be the COD:

5d – “Line, say, written up at start of poem in exactly that way (8)”

The spirit of Virgilius (departed for foreign shores, alas) lives on – this kind of thing used to be our regular Tuesday treat… ah, a la recherche de temps perdu…

When Dac does a nina, he does it well, as you’d expect! 🙂 A belated congratulations to him on his 400th Indy puzzle!

A welcome breeze after yesterday’s perplexity, although convinced myself that 12A would be crocuses (always used cacti as plural of cactus) so 1D and 2D were my last in.
