i Cryptic Crossword 1344 Quixote

June 1, 2015

Lots of long anagrams and a fewer than usual number of clues meant this took some unpicking. There was also the small matter of an added challenge with a typo in the definition at 10ac.

COD? 19ac – ‘It would be unusual getting nays with me (3,3)’.

Here’s the 2010 blog:

Agreed, rather an unusual puzzle today. Skilful work on the part of the compiler.

The most I’ve enjoyed a Quixote puzzle in ages. Highly original and a feeling that he’d put a lot of effort and love into it, rather than just knocking it off in a couple of hours (something he is almost uniquely capable of doing!).

If the typo was there in the Indy in 2010, it’s a shame no-one saw fit to correct it before republishing in the i; hey ho. As you say, an interesting puzzle – though perhaps when you’ve used that many 13- and 15-letter words/phrases the temptation to do anagram clues for them all is a bit overwhelming.
