i Cryptic Crossword 1176 by Phi

Saturday 15th November 2014

Quite a bit easier than the Phi on Thursday – which indicates that he is being both deliberate and also remarkably consistent when he pitches at this level of difficulty for our regular Saturday puzzles.

Here we had ‘Above the weather’ written above ‘Weather’ in the top half of the puzzle and ‘Under the Volcano’  underneath ‘Volcano’ in the bottom half.  What fun!  Having guessed the ruse early on, I was half expecting to see the name of a volcano and a type of weather – ‘Tambora’ and ‘monsoon’ perhaps;  but no, Phi actually repeated the key words – very bold!

COD:  Because I saw the ‘petty’ joke in 1d coming a mile off, I’m giving my vote to 26d:

Very angry with dismissal of lecturer that’s clear (5)
