I originally had SEDAN for 5 across which is a sort of a seat, albeit enclosed and mobile.

This seems slightly disloyal, but could I point anyone who’s interested in the direction of the Guardian’s prize cryptic this weekend by Picaroon. I thought it was a cracker!

Also (nitpicking again) isn’t an ascender (10ac) merely part of a letter?

I’d never heard of an ascender, but apparently it’s:

      a. The part of the tall lowercase letters, such as b, d, and h, that extends above the other lowercase letters.
      b. A letter with such a part.

      So Quixote’s OK I think.
