i Cryptic Crossword 1135 Quixote

September 29, 2014

My first answer in was 22ac, which wasn’t the most auspicious of starts. Filled in the rest pretty swiftly, with brief stops at 3d and 12ac, before having to cheat on 14d, having heard of neither the ensign or the river.

COD? 8d – ‘Food that’s bland Veronica cooked (5,3,5)’.

Yeah, I had to plug 14dn into a word-finder too.
Surprised no-one picked Quixote up on the wrong def for 3dn though, which is NOT a plant.

Google claims it’s “a simple slow-growing plant which typically forms a low crust-like, leaf-like, or branching growth on rocks, walls, and trees.”

I’m with dtw42, except that this is Crosswordland, where we’re sometimes allowed to be decades out of date with our science!

Hmm. And Chambers (I just looked) says “a compound plant consisting of a fungus and an alga living symbiotically” … which is kind of self-contradictory, surely. If it’s a fungus and an alga then it’s not a plant. Wikipedia seems pretty adamant on that point. Plant itself does get defined in Chambers as a “vegetable organism”, which fungi and algae aren’t. Oh well. Whatever.
