i Cryptic Crossword 1072 Glow-Worm

July 17, 2014

An unusual puzzle – some incredibly easy clues, including a surfeit of hidden words, and some that were nigh on impossible. I failed on 4 at the end – 19ac, 18d, 18ac and 23ac. 18ac and 19ac I don’t think I would ever have solved, the former in particular striking me as being rather unfair.

Loads I did like, but my COD nomination goes to 1ac – ‘Water-carrying bags? (10)’.

The 2009 blog is complete.

Similar tale – gave up with five to go. You did better than me on 22ac and 21d, the latter of which I found a bit unfair… 18ac seemed okay to me though, so Lord knows what that proves!

21d I guessed as soon as I saw ‘Assassin’. πŸ™‚

18ac I found difficult because it’s a word I’ve never heard of before, and the Greek character remains to me as obscure as many Greek things. I’d assumed the answer was a very obscure one, would be interested to know if others though otherwise.

Given the silence from other quarters, I’ll just say that ‘banjaxed’ is a word I’d use to mean ‘put a spanner in’ e.g. “Well that’s banjaxed my plans for the evening”. Maybe just slang from my family, a bit like ‘kiboshed’. Ajax I know from having taught primary school, plus the movie Troy’ etc.
However, although I knew that ninjas were Japanese warriors, I had no idea they were assassins. Something else learnt from crosswords! πŸ™‚

I’m with you there, Cornick; knew the word ‘banjax’ in much the context you describe – doesn’t seem to fit the definition given here, does it? Finished it in the end (with some help from my partner), but certainly those same few were the sticking points at the end.
