i Cryptic Crossword 920 Virgilius

January 21, 2014

More difficult than usual, especially in the RHS. The theme, for once, made things more difficult, with a quote I was unfamiliar with, and lots of possible names to choose from.

COD? 26ac – ‘Guy checking tracks, perhaps, making wild animal wary (10)’.

The 2009 blog is complete.

Yeah, the 17ac part was pretty obvious but I had to guess the 9d bit.

  2. Help! Need spoilers! I am in America, and cannot get the answers to this puzzle, which I picked up on my last day in the UK. I have just started my addiction to these crosswords, they are not popular in the US, and I simply cannot figure out 26 ac. Thanks for any help or answers (even to confirm what I already have)!

Hi Kim! Welcome to the world of cryptic crosswords! 🙂

26ac is RAILWAYMAN — (animal wary)*

If you follow the link on the blog, you’ll find the Fifteensquared blog which was written back when the crossword was published in The Independent in 2009, in case you’re stuck on any others.

If you’re struggling to find cryptics in the States, you can get the Independent and Guardian crosswords free online. The i still only do the paper copy.

      • Thank you! I have just linked onto the free ones, and I am totally addicted.. Does anyone else make silly noises when one gets a clue…or doesn’t get a clue…or should have gotten that clue, or there was no way to get that other clue……

        I can only say that I don’t. 🙂
