Tough. Perfect for the weekend prize puzzle it once was, perhaps less so for a weekday. Which is a pity, as there are lots of lovely clues I didn’t have the luxury of enjoying properly.

COD? 23d. ‘One would evidently drop a brick one’s so stupid! (3)’.

Thankfully, the 2008 blog is complete, otherwise there are one or two I’d have struggled to explain.

i Cryptic Crossword 856 Dac

November 6, 2013

Well, wasn’t that good! Proving yet again that a crossword doesn’t have to be difficult to be entertaining. I enjoyed lots of these, with ticks beside 10/11, 23ac, 7d and 18d, but my COD must go to 25ac. ‘Bacon, for instance, is smothered in pesto after ends have been removed (8)’.

Is it just me, or was there a typo on 10/11. Shouldn’t it be ‘ensues’, and not ‘ensures’?

The 2008 blog is complete, though there’s a mistake on 14d, which should read: ROLL in SEND rev. + S (from singular, presumably).

A lovely crossword from Eimi. Lots of smiles, and pitched about the right level for me.

The 2008 blog is complete, so I’ll just nominate a COD – 1ac. ‘Nancy boys (7)’.

I needed Fifteensquared to explain the reasoning behind one or two, but on the whole this was plain sailing.

COD? 8ac. ‘Holiday? Sort of weather not wanted then if you’ve hamper (8)’.

The 2008 blog is complete.

i Cryptic Crossword 847 Phi

November 2, 2013

October 26th, 2013
Phi in top form this week with some beautifully crafted clues. Trickier than usual though, with one or two unusual bits of vocab in amongst the answers,(plus it’s always a bit harder when the lights intersect in square 2,2 – if you follow me). Hands up if you already knew what an australorp was! Ah, it’s just occurred to me, must be a portmanteau for Australian Orpington, but I bet I wasn’t the only one to spend time looking for an answer to the definition – ‘chicken’ – that meant cowardly!
I’m going to nominate 14ac for my COD ‘A lot of information recalled about good puzzle’ giving ENIGMA — (a (m(g)ine)< . Curiously , I recently clued the same word thus: ‘Puzzle game in pieces’ (I write the odd crossword just for fun). And that’s why Phi is a crossword setter and I’m not!

I’m at a conference and may not get time to look at this properly, but here’s the original blog:

I shall leave commentary to others.
