i Cryptic Crossword 859 Phi

November 9th, 2013

For me, this was the hardest Saturday puzzle the i has put out in many a long month.  The original blogger nmsindy here http://www.fifteensquared.net/2008/12/05/independent-6908-by-phi/ was honest enough to admit he’d seen 1D’s trick of using ‘It’ to define Italian vermouth before. Personally I hadn’t, nor can I remember having ever heard of ‘Gin and It’ so this clue held me up considerably.  I struggled!

Among the many points of interest though were some unusual anagrinds:  playing, dancing and laid out were easy enough; rocks I’d met before, but busy and trickiest of all supply took me a while.  My COD 2D.

If Jonof Wales doesn’t mind too much, I’d like to put in a quick plug… Klingsor, who compiles for the Independent (and will presumably be appearing in the i in a couple of years time), has been kind enough to put a puzzle of mine on his website here:  http://www.alberichcrosswords.com/pages/maize.html .  I invite you to give it a go!

Thanks for the blog! Yes, I found this one quite difficult too, though I’d come across the use of ‘It’ before, which did help. Could I remember what the full name was though? 🙂

Congratulations on getting that crossword placed! I’m still about halfway through it. A bit more difficult than some of the others you’ve done, not helped by my ignorance of all things 1D. 🙂

Klingsor/Alberich did help me tweak a few clues, so the version on his site might be more solvable than the one I sent you, Jon.
5 Facts about ID:They’re a mega-popular boy band; there’s 5 of ’em; the one with the floppy hair’s called Harry something; they started on X Factor; they’re Anglo-Irish.
One of those facts is actually useful to solving 21across. Personally I couldn’t name you a single song by them, but a band called 1D should not, I feel, be ignored by Crosswordland 🙂
