i Cryptic Crossword 741 Virgilius

June 25, 2013

Good as always from Virgilius, though I must admit to failing on 17d, where I hadn’t heard of either the answer or the cocktail. I also missed the (dated) hidden message. COD? The not so dated 12ac. ‘Fraudulent scheme that’s handled in court (6)’.

Here’s a link to the 2008 blog, and clues missed.

    Brilliant.
I had to trawl through the dictionary for my last in: L-T-I which was ‘Lathi’. Obvious from the word play really. I did know ‘gimlet eye’, though not gimlet as a cocktail. COD for me was 20a ‘Rook’, but I did like 7a ‘Hope’ a lot too.
Interesting that the i editor has apparently altered the clue for 1/29 to drop the invitation to look for the now out of date Nina: ‘Barack Obama for president’.
