i Cryptic Crossword 663 Merlin

March 26, 2013

Crikey, that was quite difficult. Lots of nice clues in there, but too many I threw in on a wing and a prayer, without understanding the cryptic, for it to be truly enjoyable. The original blogger seems to have had similar problems. I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come as we begin to run short on Virgilius puzzles to republish. COD for me 8d – ‘First part of 13 or last part of 20 (4)’.

As ever, the old blog, plus clues missed.

Across

9 A(CHILL)ES – SEA reversed.
10 PA’S TIT
14 OP EN(EYE)D
19 LIE – Double Def.
23 EVEN T
26 MUTINEER – M + (retinue)*
29 WHITTLE R – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Whittle

Down

1 BRA INCH I LD
7 IN THE GROOVE – (Oh I never got)*
15 A D(VENT)URER – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albrecht_D%C3%BCrer
22 REI(G)N
24 Hidden in perhAPS Education
27 EEL – Apparently there’s a River LEE in Ireland.

27d River Lee also a tributary of the Thames – hence Lee Valley, Olympic venue.

Thanks! London is as foreign to us lot in Wales as is Ireland. 🙂 Did I mention I know as little about Geography as I do sport?
