460 Virgilius

July 31, 2012

A witty theme in the down clues which I shall leave you to discover, because it makes an already absurdly simple puzzle a write-in. I was lucky and unobservant enough not to notice it till I had almost finished. Being the lazy solver I am I don’t usually complain that a puzzle is too easy, but only two anagrams in a whole puzzle is perhaps taking matters to extremes.

Still, clue of the day for the amusing double definition at 9d: ‘In vicissitudes, abruptly starts drinking (3,3,5)’.

It took a trip to the old Fifteensquared blog for me to find the theme, to my shame, even though I knew there must be one with Virgilius. I don’t mind an easy one now and then, to boost my confidence. πŸ™‚

    • I feel guilty for not saying what it was now! I thought once I mentioned it was there, you’d find it with all the answers in front of you πŸ™‚ I can’t see it mentioned on 15^2; where did you find it there?

    No worries! πŸ™‚

I found it here, from July 2007:

    • Ha yes, looks like the Indy are re-running old puzzles and have moved into the 15^2 era – just as predicted in fact. I wonder if it’s worth keeping up this blog in that case …

The Friday puzzles I think are new ones, and the Saturday ones certainly so… May be worth just linking back to Fifteensquared for recycled ones?

      • Ah, that makes sense – thanks for being so on the ball. (And explains how last Friday’s managed to have an Olympic reference, as you pointed out!) I guess I’ll carry on blogging Fridays as at present.

I’m a bit less enthusiastic about Saturdays because I never read Saturday blogs myself, since the received wisdom is that for prize puzzles the blog shouldn’t appear till after the due date, by which time I’ve forgotten all about the puzzle. I wonder if many people read them.
