451 Glow-worm

July 20, 2012

A rather easy romp by Glow-worm. I was very happy to find myself blogging a puzzle with a Gilbert and Sullivan theme, though I’m sure a few more references could have been squeezed in, and the ones that appeared were distinctly on the obscure side. Yeomen and Ida and the Bab Ballads but no Mikado, Pirates or Pinafore. I suppose it was aimed only at aficionados. I hope a few other solvers appreciated it.

Apologies for the lack of a blog on the 13th, when I was away.

Across

1. ANGER MANAGEMENT: ANGER + MANAGEMENT. As the construction shows, a rather slight clue to begin with, both words in the answer having the same meaning in both readings.
9. TINWARE: {WE TRAIN}. Nice to see that it’s occasionally possible to clue this word without alluding to dirty British coasters.
10. OLD BEAN: d.d.
11. BOOTY: BOO + T(otall)Y.
12. DEEP SPACE: <SPEED + PACE.
13. SPINSTER: {TESS IN PR}.
15. POSSET: PO’S + SET.
18. SIRDAR: R in {RAIDS}.
19. FACELESS: F + ACE + LESS.
22. ASTRONAUT: {ROTA’S} + “naught”.
24. ALLOA: ALL + O + A.
25. PORTENT: PORT + (K)ENT.
26. CUISINE: {NICE (sqUIShy)}.
27. THE FAERIE QUEENE: e.d., not in fact very elusive, referring of course to Mab, a quite different Faerie Queene. Solvers with the misfortune not to be Gilbert enthusiasts may have been puzzled by the surface, a sly reference to the Bab Ballads.

Down

1. AUTOBUS: {US ABOUT}.
2. GONDOLIER: {DOING ROLE}.
3. READY: READ + Y(eoman). Another Gilbert reference in the clue, though I can’t help thinking the setter meant ‘opening of Yeomen’.
4. ABERDEEN: AB + ER + <(NEED).
5. AVOCET: (V O(n)CE) in AT.
5. ENDOSCOPE: {ONE’S D} + COPE.
7. ENEMA: hiddEN EMAnations.
8. TANGENT: TAN + GENT.
14. SOAP OPERA: SO + A + POP + ERA.
16. SHELLFIRE: {FELL} in SHIRE.
17. PASTICHE: (I + CH) in PASTE. I take this also to be a gentle reference to the Savoy operas.
18. STAY PUT: {A + PUTTY’S}.
20. SIAMESE: I(d)A in {SEEMS}. Aficionados will notice another G&S reference.
21. WASTER: S in WATER.
23. TERSE: sisTER’S Eyeshadow.
24. ADIEU: ADIE + U.
